You'll also find items that are handmade and one-of-a-kind depending on what our buyer has found on her treasure hunts. Lima Bean originally opened in 1987 under the ownership of Susann Craig, a Leelanau County native. At that time it was located in Glen Arbor at The Homestead Resort. Many people ask where the name Lima Bean came from and it's just this simple: Susann named the shop after a friend's pet turtle! In 1993 Lima Bean relocated to this spot in Suttons Bay where we look forward to staying a long time. Susann Craig hired Rachel Peplinski in 1999 to manage Lima Bean Too, a second location on the river in Fishtown, Leland. After a few years Susann closed Lima Bean Too in order to focus all attention on this Suttons Bay store. Rachel and Jeremy Peplinski purchased the business in 2003 and have delighted in continuing the tradition of bringing our customers unique and unconventional fashion.
 

One of the defining characteristics of Lima Bean are the ever-changing store displays, using re-purposed objects. We love using imagination to regenerate an item's functionality into something unexpected and brilliant. Our front window display is a great place to get a sense of this. Many visitors comment that they look forward to seeing what we'll put in the window next and we always rise to that challenge!
 

Our staff enjoys helping customers explore their sense of style. "Playing dress up" is many little girl's favorite thing and we're happy to continue the fun here every day.
